Four research entities join their efforts to reach high level biomedical research

Annual Scientific Report 2007

Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), founded in 1993, is a research centre formed by the Generalitat de Catalunya's Ministry of Ministry of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise (DIUiE), the University of Barcelona's Faculty of Medicine, the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and the Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques de Barcelona of the Council for Scientific Research (IIBB-CSIC).

Furthermore, with a spirit of collaboration, IDIBAPS is immersed in projects like Bioregió de Catalunya (BioCat). These enterprise is turning Catalonia and Barcelona into an important international pole of biomedicine. On the other hand, IDIBAPS is highly involved in the development of the Centres of Network Biomedical Research (CIBERs) and the Thematic Networks of Cooperative Research (RETICs), financed by the Health Ministry and the Innovation and Science Ministry. Their researchers participate in many of those networks, and coordinate two CIBERs, in Hepatic and Digestive Diseases (CIBERehd) and in Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases (CIBERdem), and one RETIC dedicated to AIDS (RIS).

IDIBAPS's fundamental objective is to integrate quality clinical research and high level basic research. This way we achieve a more effective transfer of scientific breakthroughs in the prevention and treatment of the most common health problems in Spain.

A shared space in downtown Barcelona makes easier the cooperation between Institutions forming IDIBAPS

IDIBAPS is located in Barcelona's center. It houses the Medical Faculty (University of Barcelona), the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, and the Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques de Barcelona (IIBB-CSIC). The proximity between this basic and clinical research entities facilitates the traslational cooperation between laboratory and medical care.

The Ministry of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise (DIUiE) offers its institutional support to our investigation through a close collaboration. A good example of it is the rebuilding carried out in the Faculty of Medicine with Catalan Government’s financing, which endowed IDIBAPS with 8.000 m2 of laboratories of its own. With the construction  of a new building dedicated to research annex to Hospital Clínic, the Centro de Investigación Biomédica Esther Koplowitz (CIBEK), IDIBAPS is growing up in potential and prestige.

  • Management infrastructure

The administrative infrastructure that supports the research work of the IDIBAPS, capable of managing and generating resources as well as employing technical personnel, is the responsability of the Fundació Clínic per a la Recerca Biomèdica. IDIBAPS is jointly financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
IDIBAPS' governing organ is the Board of Governors. The scientific director of IDIBAPS is Dr. Ramón Gomis, Manager of IDIBAPS, Manager of Fundació Clínic for Medical Research, and Director of Research at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.

  • Research staff

The scientists at IDIBAPS come from the various research centres that make it up: the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, the Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques de Barcelona-CSIC, and the personnel contracted by the Fundació Clínic. The current number of researchers attached to IDIBAPS is around 350. Furthermore, there is a large team of graduates of differing levels and scholars dedicated to research tasks that support the research lines carried out by IDIBAPS scientists. The work of some investigators is financed by programmes of the Fondo de Investigación Sanitaria, the Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats (ICREA) and the Ramón y Cajal.

High level biomedical research demands the use of high cost technologies and equipment. Moreover, the complexity of many of these technologies requires specialised staff. Often several research teams use a given technology without any of them needing its exclusive or permanent use. It is for these cases that we must promote the creation of a common service for all the research teams. This option allows us to optimise the material and human resources that the institutions contribute and to facilitate access to external funding. Therefore, the strengthening of the research support services is a strategic and fundamental option for IDIBAPS.

All the research that is carried out in IDIBAPS is strictly regulated by the applicable national bioethical rules. IDIBAPS has a reputable Clinical Research Ethics Committee (CEIC) and an accredited Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee. In addition, the Hospital Clínic's evaluation, support, and prevention Unit offers its investigators, as well as other public and private institutions, consultancy and support services for research.

The promotion of the shared use of the scientific and technical services is a strategic option open to other public or private institutions

In any scientific project, it is essential to demonstrate that the research staff has the scientific and intellectual capacity to carry out the proposed objectives. Today, the simplest and most reliable way to demonstrate this capacity is through the analysis of scientific production based on the publications and on the journals where original articles have been published. The impact factor of these journals is a useful measure to estimate the scientific quality of the researchers in a particular institution.

The scientific production of the investigators who are part of DIBAPS is very high. Between 2003 and 2007 they have published 2.794 original articles. The average impact factor of each article is 4,37 points. The global impact factor for the journals where the above-mentioned articles have appeared is 12.212,54 points. Most of these publications are in the first quartile of each specialization, which means it one of the most out-standing journals. The annual median is 550 articles.

Official statistics of the European Union show that the CSIC and the Universidad de Barcelona are the two most productive scientific institutions in Spain. According to the first bibliometric map on biomedicine in Spain (2002; J. Camí, Mapa de la producción científica española en biomedicina y ciencias de la salud), the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona heads the list of hospital centres with the greatest scientific production in Spain, with more than 2,900 publications between 1994 and 2000. The Clínic is among the ten hospitals of the EU in terms of the greatest scientific production. The collaboration among IDIBAPS' three scientific institutions, together with the institutional support of the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Ministry of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise (DIUiE), guarantees sufficient critical mass to support and to increase the positive results of its research projects.

A sufficient critical mass of researchers to continue leading scientific production in Spain

The aim of our institution it is to look for a balanced between public and private funding

All of this IDIBAPS scientific production has been carried out by its own researchers. But, without a doubt, it would have been impossible without the financial support given to the institution by official agencies such as: Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (ERDF), Fondo de Investigación Sanitaria (Ministerio de Sanidad y Consumo), Consell Interdepartamental de Recerca i Innovació Tecnològica (CIRIT), Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID) or National Institutes of Health from United States. The global public funds received from public agencies during the 2003-2007 period raises to 103 Million euros. During the same period, the economic resources from private sector have raised to 62 Million euros.

The amounts for the year 2007 contributed by each institution forming IDIBAPS are: University of Barcelona, 4.401.619 euros; Institut d'investigacions Biomèdiques de Barcelona of CSIC, 5.562.623 euros; Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, 21.770.782 euros; Fundació Clínic, 29.390.742 euros; Generalitat of Catalonia through DIUiE 4.300.000; and from the projects awarded to researchers, 11.151.000 euros. A total of 76.576.766 euros.
