IDIBAPS is divided into five areas with a total of 58 teams

The Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer centres its research on the following areas of biomedicine

	Area 1		Biological aggression and response mechanisms
	Area 2		Respiratory, cardiovascular and renal pathobiology and bioengineering
	Area 3		Liver, digestive system and metabolism
	Area 4		Clinical and experimental neurosciences
	Area 5		Oncology and haematology
	Area 6		International health
			Multi-centre studies

These areas, divided among 58 teams, are evaluated periodically using two criteria. On one hand, their scientific output, based on original articles published in high impact scientific magazines (mentioned in the Science Citation Index). And on the other hand, the capacity to obtain economic resources through public and private calls for bids.
